Stonehouse Turnpike Trust                                  (updated 24th Sept 2013)

This trust, created in 1784, was responsible for the short length of road connecting Plymouth to the Dock, through Stonehouse, and over Stonehouse Bridge. The Trust was closed in 1843 and it’s responsibilities transferred to Commissioners who continued to operate toll gates.

Stonehouse 1822

An Act to alter and enlarge the Term and Powers of an Act of His late Majesty, for the making, repairing, lighting, watching and watering certain Roads, leading from the Borough of Plymouth to Stonehouse Bridge and Plymouth Dock in the County of Devon; and for regulating the Stands and Fares of Hackney Coaches and Carts using the same. [15th May 1822]

 

WHEREAS an Act was made in the Forty-fifth Year of the Reign of His late Majesty King George the Third, intituled An Act for the making, repairing, lighting, watching, and watering certain Roads, from the Borough of Plymouth to Stonehouse Bridge and Plymouth Dock in the County of Devon; and for regulating the Stands and Fares of Hackney Coaches and Carts using the same: And whereas the Trustees appointed in or by virtue of the said recited Act, have proceeded in the Execution thereof, and have borrowed considerable Sums of Money upon the Credit of the Tolls thereby granted, which Sums of Money cannot be repaid, nor can the said Roads be kept in Repair, unless the Term and Powers granted by the said recited Act are further continued and enlarged, and unless additional Powers are granted and the Tolls increased; and it would be attended with great Convenience to the Inhabitants of the said Borough of Plymouth, and of the Towns of Stonehouse and Plymouth Dock, if Powers were given for the repairing and maintaining a certain Road, lending from George Street, in the said Borough of Plymouth, through Union Street in the said Borough, and Union Street, Edgecombe Street, and over the Quay in the Parish of East Stonehouse to the East Side of the said Bridge called Stonehouse Bridge, in the said Parish of East Stonehouse; but as Such several Purposes cannot be effected without the Aid and Authority of Parliament, May it therefore please Your Majesty that, it may be enacted…….

An Act for erecting and maintaining a Bridge over Stonehouse Mill Pool, at or near Stonehouse Mills in the County of Devon. [29th May 1830.]

There are 4 miles of road thru 3 parishes – all repaired by the trustees

3 toll gates and one side bar

The roads are stated to be in “good” condition – no part under indictment for want of repair.

Stoke Road; UC heading N from Millbay, over Union Street, through Stoke Street to stoke and jct with Milehouse Road.

Millbay Dock Road;  UC road as Mill Bay Road, Stonehouse.
