Honiton & Ilminster Turnpike Trust                      (updated 24th Sept 2013)

This trust was created in 1807 to build the new road down the hill above Monkton. This new route for the London Road connected with the existing turnpike at Ilminster and the old road through Chard, at the Devonshire Inn junction. A new road to Taunton was added later.

Honiton Ilminster 1807

An Act for repairing and improving the Road from the Honiton Turnpike Road, near Yard Farm, in the Parish of Upottery, in the County of Devon, to the Ilminster Turnpike Road, near the Village of Horton, in the Parish of Ilminster, in the County of Somerset. [17th March 1807.]

 

Honiton Ilminster 1828

An Act for more effectually repairing the Road from the Honiton Turnpike Road near Yard Farm in the Parish of Upottery in the County of Devon, towards Ilminster, to the Eastern Boundary of the Parish of Buckland Saint Mary in the County of Somerset, and other Roads communicating therewith. [13th May 1828.]

There are 15 miles of road thru 6 parishes – all repaired by the trustees

3 toll gates and 2 side bar

The roads are stated to be in “fair” repair – no part under indictment for want of repair.

Ilminster Road; A30 from Yard Cross (Yard Farm, Rawridge, half way down Monkton Hill) to Devonshire In jct then A303 through Newtown and across county boundary to Horton (last bit now UC) (eastern end of Parish of Buckland St Mary (about 10 miles).

Brown Down Road. B3170 jct with A303 (Holman Cavel) across county boundary into Somerset, over Brown Down to edge of Taunton at Shoreditch (about 7 miles)
